Our Fellow Reflections
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Psychology
CTPCLC gave me the opportunity to read the course on social entrepreneurship in Business School even though I was from Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). Coupled with the heightened awareness of different marginalized communities through my involvement in the interest hubs, these experiences led me to think about using entrepreneurship to address social issues we face in Singapore. I went on to do an internship with a social enterprise start-up, through CTPCLC's contact, which further increased my exposure and interest to embark on my social entrepreneurship journey. I'm really glad for the friendships I have forged in CTPCLC; these friendships are special as we would often share our views on social issues in Singapore, and we are connected by the desire to make positive impact in our society - in our own little ways. The friendships and experiences I have had in CTPCLC will stay with me for a long time to come.
I co-founded Foreword Coffee, a social enterprise that seeks to empower persons with intellectual disabilities through training and employment in the specialty coffee industry. The burgeoning coffee culture in Singapore saw the growing popularity of alternative coffee brewing methods which are relatively less complex than the espresso method. This presented an opportunity for persons with special needs to work in the coffee industry, given sufficient training and the opportunity to do so. The increased visibility of persons with special needs through employment could help to increase understanding and awareness of the abilities of persons with special needs, encouraging a strengths-perspective in our society. Foreword Coffee hopes to lead by example, showing how quality coffee can be served by our special baristas, and to transform the F&B industry into a more inclusive one.
